Hot Dog Ad Ads in Newark Penn Station Seek Hot Dog Lawsuit Plaintiffs
This fall, commuters passing through Newark Penn Station will be exposed to a case of intrigue with consequences as deadly as Murder on the Orient Express. Twenty-four large PCRM wall posters will alert them that consuming hot dogs increases their risk of cancer—and that the big corporations selling those hot dogs and other processed meats don’t want them to know about the danger. Cut Above AwardsPCRM Seeks Nominations for Dissection Alternatives Award
Each school year, educators and students who realize the value of nonanimal learning methods take great leaps to adopt educationally superior alternatives to animal dissection. In 2009, PCRM’s inaugural Cut Above Awards for Dissection Alternatives will honor an educator and a student who have implemented humane, nonanimal alternatives to dissection. The winners will each receive $1,000, as will their respective schools. Read more >

Kid Eating School LunchSchool Lunch Report Card Shows Some Improvement
PCRM’s seventh annual School Lunch Report Card finds many school cafeterias improving, but more meatless meals are still needed to fight childhood obesity. The report card grades the nation’s major school districts on how well schools promote the benefits of healthy eating to students. This year, PCRM dietitians analyzed the lunches served in 20 elementary school districts across the country. Read more >

Grilled ChickenNew Study Exposes Cancer Risk in Grilled Chicken Meals at Leading Restaurants
A new PCRM study in Nutrition and Cancer: An International Journal found that grilled chicken items at leading chain restaurants are birds of a feather when it comes to increasing cancer risk. An analysis of 100 grilled chicken items from McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Chili’s, Applebee’s, Outback Steakhouse, and T.G.I. Friday’s found that all contained PhIP, the most abundant of a group of carcinogens called heterocyclic amines (HCAs)—and the HCA likely to contribute most to overall cancer risk. Learn more >

PigletCruel Use of Animals in ATLS Courses Ends at Two More Universities
In September, PCRM confirmed that the University of Vermont College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics have stopped using live animals to teach emergency procedures in Advanced Trauma Life Support courses. The confirmations came less than four months after PCRM filed official complaints with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service citing the unlawful use of live animals by the two universities.
