Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)
PCRM Action Alert

Dear PCRM supporter,

Thanks to you, California’s Proposition 2 (PDF), the most ambitious ballot initiative for animals ever undertaken, was approved yesterday by an overwhelming margin. This extraordinary victory will improve the lives of 20 million animals.

Proposition 2 will end one of the most atrocious abuses of farm animals in California—the practice of cramming animals into cages so small that they can’t even turn around or extend their limbs. By mandating that breeding pigs, calves confined for veal, and egg-laying hens are given more space, Proposition 2 will also decrease the chance of pathogens infecting the animals and spreading to humans.

The Proposition 2 effort was led by the Humane Society of the United States and Farm Sanctuary. But the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine also pitched in. We have supported Proposition 2 from the start—from gathering thousands of signatures to help get Proposition 2 on the ballot to working with our member doctors to publish op-eds and letters to the editor supporting the initiative to our get-out-the-vote efforts. We could not have done it without your support.

Proposition 2 will set a positive precedent for the rest of the country and will likely lead to similar ballot initiatives in other states. Thank you to all Californians who voted “yes” on Proposition 2 and to everyone who called or e-mailed friends and family in California alerting them to this historic initiative.

We hope we can count on your assistance with future campaigns.

Best regards,

Kyle Ash
