More than 1,300 residents of Chandler, Ariz., have signed statements of opposition to the proposed Covance animal-experimentation facility. After PCRM gathered statements of opposition from those who do not want the proposed facility in Chandler, PCRM informed other residents about the consequences of Covance coming to their town. Only 19 medical schools in the country still use live animal labs to teach basic concepts in physiology, pharmacology, or surgery. Because the Medical College of Wisconsin has access to modern simulation technology and Louisiana State University has to temporarily halt the labs because of hurricane damage, these two schools have unique opportunities to permanently end the use of animals in medical education.
