pig Animals Win in New York and Missouri; Wisconsin Continues to Lag Behind
Last year had already been a banner year for PCRM’s live animal lab campaign. Six medical schools had confirmed the switch from live animal labs to validated non-animal educational methods. Then, in the last few weeks of 2007, more good news arrived: Both New York Medical College (NYMC) and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis announced they had ended their live animal lab programs. With thousands of Americans traveling by air this holiday season, PCRM checked out the healthfulness of food at some of the nation’s busiest airports. The seventh annual Airport Food Review found that although some airports scored lower than in years past, more than 80 percent of the restaurants surveyed offered at least one low-fat, cholesterol-free vegetarian entrée. When the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) asked Californians how it should implement a new “Green Chemistry” policy for the state, PCRM responded: “Not with animal testing!” PCRM experts and many concerned California members submitted comments asking the agency to use non-animal-based testing methods.
